[SkepTech 2013] Panel – Sex in Cyberspace; Porn, OkCupid, and the Internet

Notes from this panel discussion:

1) What is the most interesting and important way technology has changed sex, relationships and dating?

  • Allows us to find more people like us
  • There is no geographic affection between where you live and who you date, you can meet people elsewhere.
  • Allows gay people to date and find other people like them.

2) Access to the internet has blurred the lines between what is sex what isn’t, what is cheating what isn’t, what is a standard that should be use and what is a reasonable way to approach this conversation?

  • It is assumed monogamy is the default standard – when it shouldn’t be. Individual should decide what defines cheating and what doesn’t. Monogomy and non-monogomy should be a spectrum and not either/or
  • Discussion help understand each others preconception of what is monogamy and what isn’t, also helps identify boundaries which all people in a relationship are happy with.
  • One persons concept of cheating could be when you physically have sex with someone, another persons concept of cheating could be when you simply send flirty messages to another person. So you need to have that discussion and establish boundaries.
  • Do not assume the boundaries.

3) What is the panels view on porn?

  • Porn itself is not inherently bad, but people conflate porn and the porn industry which is different.
  • Internet is democratising porn and killing the porn industry. Mantra: “Production is in the hands of the workers”

4) What is the panels view of voyeuristic porn and secret filming of porn?

  • It’s not OK to violate people’s privacy
  • Even if faces are blurred it still creates fear amongst women that they are being filmed which is harmful
  • It does not matter if they are celebrity videos or regular public videos. Celebrities are people too and their privacy should be respected.
  • Viewing porn filmed without consent are just as bad as the people who filmed it.

5) Where is the internet going and how will it continue to change?

  • Internet is entirely unpredicable
  • Going to a place of openness
  • More small communities of specialist interest groups forming
